Provides entry-level scuba diving certification through the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI). Students will learn fundamental knowledge and skills necessary to scuba dive safely and confidently, including dive theory, equipment use, underwater physics and physiology, dive planning, and safety procedures. Course includes confined water (pool) training and open water certification dives. Upon successful completion, students will be certified to dive independently with a buddy to a maximum depth of 60 feet and will receive a PADI Open Water Diver certification card recognized worldwide.
Course Learning Outcome Introductory Statement: This course aligns with PADI standards for Open Water Diver certification and meets the recommendations of the American Council on Education (ACE) for college credit in Physical Education. The course emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for safe recreational diving, preparing students for independent diving activities and advanced certifications.
Demonstrate proficiency in fundamental scuba diving skills including equipment assembly, mask clearing, regulator recovery, buoyancy control, and emergency procedures in both confined and open water environments.
Apply knowledge of dive physics, physiology, and environmental factors to plan safe dives, calculate air consumption, prevent dive-related injuries, and make informed decisions underwater.
Perform pre-dive safety checks, conduct buddy system protocols, and execute appropriate responses to common dive emergencies and equipment malfunctions.
Navigate underwater using natural references and compass navigation techniques while maintaining proper buoyancy and buddy contact.
Demonstrate responsible environmental practices and explain the ecological importance of aquatic ecosystems encountered during diving activities.
